Be respectful. Communicate. Fairly self explanatory, we think. Respect your fellow player as the feeling human being they are. No one here is under any obligation to cater to any other person's whims. This is a game, and RPing is a hobby. We encourage discussion of plots and communication among players and to the mods. If you have a question, ask before assuming; it'll save everyone a lot of grief.
Don't god-mode. Your character is yours to control, as are your NPCs (pets, familiars, etc). However, unless you have express permission from the concerned players, do not dictate their character's expressions, actions, reactions, or the results of your character's actions upon them. This extends to their pets and NPCs as well.
RL > RP Life happens, and should be priority to an online game. It's fine to take a hiatus, but if you believe you will not be able to devote the time to the game that you need to, we respectfully ask that you drop any characters you won't have time for so that they may be recast. Players who take frequent hiatuses will have a character limit imposed until such time as they are consistently active within the game.
Activity Players are expected to post or participate in at least 1 thread every month per character as well as keep up with replies to other characters and threads. Activity checks will occur once a month. Characters that continuously meet the bare minimum to resist removal will be given a warning for not meeting activity requirements. After a warning, this character will be removed on the second offense.
In regard to plot specific characters (defined as any character used primarily to further specific plots), the thread requirement may be waived for months in which the character was not required for plot purposes.
Journal entries and owls will count toward activity; five or more owl/journal entries may be substituted for one log/thread. However, threading is the preferred method of activity.
Leaving the game. If the game isn't interesting to you anymore, or you've lost the drive or the muses, let the mods know. Please don't simply assume you'll be caught on an activity check and 'bow out' that way. Don't ignore e-mails from us. Simply let us know you're no longer interested and we'll recast your canons and wish you luck in finding a game that suits you better.
Game Play
ICA = ICC In character actions bring about in character consequences. If your character engages in violent activity, they will be punished if they are caught. There may be character death if events lead up to it.
Scaled Character Limit Players may hold three characters to start. All current characters must be played before another is allowed. If a player is not active with the characters they already have, the mods may not allow them to have more characters even if they are below the limit. Plot specific characters are not included in the limit as long as they respond to plot posts as requested.
Don't ignore other players. While we are not demanding everyone play with everyone else, if you seem to be cliqueing up or ignoring characters yours would logically interact with, we are going to ask that you mend this.
Narratives and "stand alones" are good too. Role-play is about telling a story as much as it is about interacting. We do request you don't pick up any closely related high profile characters, but if you wanted to play family members that might have significant interactions, we're fine with them engaging in stand-alone narratives as long as they're still active with the other characters.
Real time posts. December 1, 2010 = December 1, 1998
Posting Specifics
Post titles. We do ask that all posts have titles. In the media community, we do request a distinction in the subject line, such as: "Owl: addressee" or "Journal Entry" or "Journal Entry charmed for name(s)"
Tags. We do require character tags (character first & last name) and a date tag (1998 12, 1999 01, etc). Also, when a thread is finished, please mark it with the !complete tag.
Headers
Who - who is involved. If you're tagging someone specific, put their name along with your character's name here. If it's open, anyone can jump in; please specify Time/Date - Time of day and date (evening, December 18, 1998) Location - Great Hall, Slytherin Commons, Hog's Head Pub, Surrey, etc Rating/Warning - only really necessary if there's questionable/triggering/adult material involved. You don't have to warn for swears, but it's still polite. Summary - what the post intends to accomplish or a line or so of how it's starting Status - open, ongoing / private, ongoing / complete
Journal entries Your characters have the option of purchasing journals linked into a network. All journal entries are to be placed in haunted_media. Journal entries can be charmed private (only the writer can read it), marked private to certain people (each person needs to be named), or marked private to a group. Tags will be required here, though we request only character tags be used. Journal entries not marked private will be considered public and viewable by anyone with a journal.
Owls, Messages, and other notes Any form of communication should be placed in haunted_media. This includes owls, notes delivered within Hogwarts, and conversations conducted via enchanted parchment (it's all the rage with the students).
Miscellaneous
Haunted has a very low tolerance for OOC drama. It kills muses and upsets players and mods alike, and we don't deal with it here. If you are a drama-monger, you won't last long in this game.
We define drama as anything outside of the spirit of the game. This includes but is not limited to: deliberate harassment of players, deriding or mocking other player's plots/pairings, deliberate exclusion of certain players, defying the spirit if not the letter of a rule, and arguing with the mods. Discussions are fine, arguments are not. We are the mods, this is our game. We're open to discussion and new ideas - we are not open to being told we're doing things wrong simply because our tastes don't coincide with yours.
Characters
All Characters
Characters are expected to behave in a way that adheres to canon and follow logical progressions in development. Applications will be held to stated canon standards with an encouragement to elaborate on the behind-the-scenes development.
Plot-specific Characters
Some characters are requested in game for a specific plot purpose, sort of like "played NPCs". These characters, once defined as plot specific, will not be held to any activity standards, but will be required to respond to plot-related posts in which they are meant to play a part.
Ghosts
Ghosts will follow the time line as far as when they become a person. Ghosts applied for after the start of the game will still wait the one-month period before becoming a live person, with solidification beginning around the 2 week mark.
As a ghost, their ability to interact is limited; please keep this in mind when applying for a ghost. Ghosts are restricted to the residence of the person they are haunting, and interactions are limited to people in that residence at any given time. Before a ghost begins to solidify, they can disappear or phase through walls/floors/ceilings.
Once a ghost begins to solidify, it becomes increasingly difficult for them to phase through things, and they begin to feel their environment. Once a ghost becomes alive again, they lose all memories of what happened during their ghostly phase (so it's a bit like a 'reset' as far as game play goes for them), but they do retain all of their memories up to their point of death.
Werewolves
† Werewolves have two forms - human and full wolf. There is no 'wolfman' middle form, nor is the bipedal wolf form seen in PoA movie their final form.
† Werewolves transform only on the night of the full, though they are likely moody and cranky the day before, and very tired the day after.
† Silver has no special effect on werewolves.
† Werewolves who take the wolfsbane potion will retain their human mind and memory. They can communicate "telepathically" (for lack of a better term) with other werewolves and animagi who are shifted, but NOT humans.
† The Wolfsbane potion is remarkably complex, and only highly skilled potions masters can make it. In game at this point, only Severus can make it (though it is available through the hospital, and a healer over 23 years old specializing in potions may be allowed to make it).
† Werewolves are resistant to magic/spells. Not immune, but resistant. A stunning spell that would knock out a normal wizard will have an effect on the werewolf, but not stun him completely. A stronger spell, or multiple spells in close succession, will have more of an impact.
† In human form, werewolves will have enhanced senses of smell, sight, and hearing. They're stronger than average humans, and have slightly quicker reflexes. Their average body temperature is a little higher, and they metabolize a little faster. They heal more quickly - except from wounds inflicted by other weres. These would heal at normal speed or leave scars, depending on the severity.
† Female werewolves cannot carry a pregnancy to term. The stress of shifting causes miscarriages.
† Being bitten by a turned werewolf will cause the bitten person to become a werewolf as well. Scratches while shifted will leave scars. Scratches and bites while the werewolf is in human form will still be classified as magical injuries and the injured party may feel some effects of werewolfism (a craving for red meat, for example) but will not be turned.
Vampires
† Vampires are the living dead and cannot reproduce. Therefore, there are no half-vampires or part-vampires. It's all or nothing. (We know there was a "part" vampire canonically, but it just doesn't make sense with the rest of our world building.)
† Vampires can turn humans into vampires by draining all of their blood and then letting the human feed from them.
† Vampires are not wizards, however they have powers of their own:
-- Above average strength, speed, and reflexes -- Levitation -- Can shift into a bat or a wolf, but one vampire cannot have both forms -- Are resistant to unforgivable curses and Avada Kedavra has no effect on them
† Vampires have an aversion to garlic and are weak against fire.
† If a wizard is turned (completely turned into a vampire, not just bitten) then they no longer have use of their magic.
† Vampires are considered "beings" by the Ministry of Magic. They are cautiously tolerated by most of society, but there are those who feel they should be eliminated. For the most part, vampires live with their own kind away from wizarding society.
